SHELLEY LOWELL

Shelley Lowell was born in the Bronx, NY in 1946. She graduated with a BFA in Advertising Design and Visual Communications from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Since then, she has maintained a high level of creativity as a fine artist, commercial designer and poet, winning numerous awards for her art and designs. Her work has been published in over a dozen books. Her art and poetry is her way to communicate her inner-self and her reaction to her surroundings. Her artistic ability was developed over the last 30+ years expressed as contemporary artwork with an edge, a statement and a message.

In her fine art, she evolved over the years. A NYC Feminist representational and social commentary visual artist in the 1970s, she produced monumental original artwork and poetry as a counter statement to what she felt as demeaning aspects of the sexual revolution of the period. Ms. Lowell continued her figurative fine art quest while maintaining a successful creative ad agency first in NYC (1974-77), then later in
Atlanta, GA (1977-96). Shortly after moving to Asheville, NC (1996) her art works changed into non-representational abstracted style in which she continued to work on through 2003.

In her paintings and poetry today, she uses metaphor such as a tree as a symbol of humanity or a symbol of the world humanity inhabits, creating the duality of the seen and the unseen, metaphorically and in reality. Both covey a message through its subject, scale and its underlayed composition and atmosphere.

Her art has been in museum exhibitions: The International Museum of Erotic Art (CA), High Museum of Art (GA), The Bronx Museum of the Arts (NY); solo shows, a two-person show, group and juried shows from New York City to Atlanta, GA. Her work is in numerous private  and corporate collections including Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (NYC), Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville (GA) and the Dr. Pepper Company, (TX).

Her work is in the Archive Library of the National Museum of Women in the Arts (Washington, DC). Ms. Lowell resides in Baltimore, Maryland where she has her studio.
