WILLIAM DUFFY
Sculpture

“As an artist, I have become keenly aware of the importance of public art amenities. I reject the notion that sculpture is a decorative afterthought in a public place, believing instead that art and its surroundings are part of an organic whole with multiple layers of meaning.”

William Duffy was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1953. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, a MFA in University of Maryland at College Park in 1983. Four years of experience in state-of-the-art foundry techniques gained at Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture in Princeton, New Jersey, has prepared him to direct and execute all phases of design, fabrication, and installation of his large-scale public art projects. Currently Mr. Duffy maintains a studio in Baltimore, Maryland.

Duffy is widely recognized for his large-scale commissions in a variety of public and private collections. His work celebrates humanity and the human form, and its relationship to the environment. Mr. Duffy's art is rooted in sculpture's figurative tradition, with decidedly contemporary influences. Mr. Duffy is increasingly involved in the planning of the landscape areas around his work, including water, as an element in his compositions. He works most often in bronze, stainless steel and granite to create durable works that are designed to withstand time, weather and human contact.

The artist's exhibition roster is impressive, and includes major museums and galleries nationwide. Even more impressive is Duffy’s commissions record which includes " Trumpeters", located in the center courtyard of the Women's Poetry Garden in Dallas Arboretum. Duffy recently completed fountain projects for Simon & DeBartolo Properties in Coral Springs, Florida. His other commissions include: The" Pennsylvania Worker", located in the Governor's Mansion, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Nine sculpture amenities for the JMB properties in Chicago, Illinois; five fountain sculpture compositions for the "Italian Gardens" in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania;” Synergy" for the, Benton Municipal Building, City of Baltimore and recently awarded a commission for the City of Baltimore, Ashburton Elementary School, under the 1% art-in-architecture program.
